Defendant in Home Invasion Robbery Sentenced to Life In Prison

Santa Rosa,CA | June 26, 2019

Defendant Yacob Dawit Dain, 33 years old of Santa Rosa, was sentenced today by the Honorable Bradford J. DeMeo to serve 30 years, plus 27 years-to-life in prison for his role in a home invasion robbery committed on October 18, 2017.  Dain was found guilty by a jury in February of this year of home invasion robbery, first degree burglary, kidnapping, assault with a firearm, and four counts of false imprisonment.  Dain’s two prior “strike” convictions, and two prior serious felony convictions were found true by the Court.

District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This defendant was a central figure in a calculated and organized assault on an innocent family.  The sentence reflects the violent crimes committed as well as the significant criminal background of this offender.”

During the incident Dain and three other suspects entered the victim’s home through a kitchen window.  The defendants pointed firearms at all family members, including a 10 year old child.  The family was assaulted and had their lives threatened as the suspects stole money, guns, jewelry, and marijuana.  Dain was pulled-over shortly thereafter with some of the victims’ personal items in his car.  The other three suspects were never captured.

The Court sentenced the defendant to the maximum sentence allowed, basing his decision on the serious and violent nature of the crime. The Court further pointed-out that the family was deeply affected, particularly because the crime occurred during the Sonoma County wildfires.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Tania Partida, assisted by District Attorney Investigator Gregory Wojcik, and Santa Rosa Police Detectives Vaughn Andrews and Jason Jucatan.
