Student Loan Forgiveness Scam

Published: February 06, 2025

Be aware that there are currently emails, calls, or text messages circulating that purport to be offering assistance with forgiveness of your student loan.  The email indicates that it is time sensitive for you to respond to be eligible for loan forgiveness. I personally received one and my loans were paid off many years ago.  In light of the recent controversies around student loan forgiveness, this gives scammers prime opportunity to pray on this uncertainty and reach consumers seeking such programs.

You should contact Studentaid.gov or your lender to verify any communications regarding your student loan.  Do not give any personal information or account information about your loan.  Student Aid does not contract with Third parties for processing forgiveness programs.

The FTC previously posted information regarding these types of scams at https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2021/12/tis-season-student-loan-scam-calls.
