Valley Pacific Petroleum Services, Inc. Pays $1.1 Million Dollars to Settle California Environmental Violations

Santa Rosa, CA | December 02, 2024

District Attorney Carla Rodriguez announced today that her office, in conjunction with the District Attorneys of Fresno County, Humboldt County, Kern County, Shasta County, San Joaquin County and Tulare County, settled a civil enforcement action against Valley Pacific Petroleum Servicves Inc., dba Renner Petroleum for violations of Environmental Laws and Regulations in the amount of $1.1 million dollars. The Stipulated Judgment was signed on November 19, 2024, by the Honorable Bradford DeMeo.

Valley Pacific Petroleum operates a chain of gas stations in Northern and Central California. Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention Division received a notice of a petroleum spill at the gas station operated in Cloverdale. When the Fire Marshal visited the site to ensure the spill had been properly managed, he determined that there were three above ground storage tanks on the site that were not permitted either through the County or the City of Cloverdale, and that the storage tanks did not comply with the regulatory requirements for above ground storage tanks. Upon further investigation and collaboration with the other counties, it was discovered that the same type of improper above ground storage tank was being used at other locations. There were also several other environmental violations noted in connection with the operation of the stations. After being contacted by the District Attorneys Offices, Valley Pacific cooperated with the investigation and removed all of the above ground storage tanks from the facilities that were using them.

District Attorney Carla Rodriguez stated, “Our office is deeply committed to making sure that companies that do business in our county comply with Environmental Regulations to protect our natural resources. We are fortunate to work with Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention Division to enforce environmental regulations in our county.”

In addition to the monetary provisions of the judgment, Valley Pacific Petroleum Services is also enjoined from using above ground storage tanks that do not comply with state or federal specifications or violating any provisions of Chapters 6.5,6.7 and 6.95 of Division 20 of the Health & Safety Code. This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Caroline L. Fowler and Dustin Hughson.
