Your Long-Lost Relative May Not Have Actually Left You an Inheritance

Published: September 01, 2022

The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that it has been receiving reports from people getting letters in the mail from a law firm. The letters say they are looking for the heir of a multi-million-dollar inheritance, and they think it might be you. They offer to split the inheritance between you, their law firm, and some charities, and ask that you keep this information secret.

These letters are from scammers who are requesting that you email them immediately and provide personal information, like your Social Security or bank account numbers, your money, or both.

If you receive one of these letters, don’t respond. Keep your money and your information to yourself. Never send money or information to a stranger who promises big rewards.

Pass this information on to a friend and report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
